Invisalign Q & A

Why Invisalign?

There are several options available for straightening your teeth, but none of them offer the convenience and comfort that Invisalign offers.

Each set of Invisalign aligners are custom made for your teeth. Made of virtually invisible plastic that gradually shifts your teeth into their proper positioning, Invisalign alignment trays offer a smooth transition to straighten your teeth. Traditional braces use brackets and wires to move your teeth, potentially causing mouth sores, plaque buildup, discoloration, and difficulty eating. Invisalign aligners are removable for cleaning and eating, eliminating those side effects. With costs comparable to metal braces, Invisalign treatments are a popular alternative for patients looking to improve their smile.

How does Invisalign work?

Building your custom Invisalign aligners begins with digital X-rays, impressions, and photographs of your teeth. From there, the team at Elegant Smiles of Matawan can fully map out your custom aligners and how your teeth will change over time with Invisalign. Each patient’s plan is unique, but the average Invisalign treatment lasts one year.

Every two weeks, patients receive a new set of aligners. Some patients’ aligners require special fasteners, which bond to your teeth temporarily, so your alignment tray clips in effortlessly. Fasteners are mostly invisible and are removed at the end of treatment. Your aligners are less comfortable at first, but as your teeth adjust, their fit improves. For best results, patients should wear their aligners 22 hours a day.

Will I need a retainer after completing my Invisalign treatment?

While each case is different, most doctors recommend all orthodontic patients wear a retainer. Retainers prevent teeth from gradually shifting back to their initial position, and ensure your treatment lasts. During Invisalign treatment, your jawbone softens or even disappears (a process called resorption) as teeth move into their final position.

Once you complete your Invisalign treatment, orthodontic retainers hold your teeth in place while new bone deposits. Your body builds up enough bone to stabilize teeth in about 9-12 months. At this point, your dentist may advise wearing your retainer less frequently. Consistently wearing a retainer keeps your teeth from shifting. Not wearing a retainer for a few days may cause it to feel tight and uncomfortable.
