Teeth Whitening Q & A

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental procedure that removes stains and discoloration to brighten the appearance of your teeth. Over time, the pores of tooth enamel can hold stains or take on a yellow appearance from:

  • Using tobacco
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Drinking coffee, cola, red wine, or tea
  • Consuming dark-colored berries
  • Excessive fluoride
  • Medications

The natural aging process also causes the enamel to grow thinner, making teeth look less bright and white and more yellow. If you’re not happy with the yellowing of your teeth, you can get your teeth whitened at Elegant Smiles of Matawan. Use the online tool or call the practice to schedule your appointment to see if you’re a candidate for teeth whitening.

Who can get teeth whitening?

Not everyone can get their teeth whitened. If you are an adult over the age of 16 with healthy gums, teeth without fillings, and teeth that have taken on a yellowish color, you are a good candidate for teeth whitening. It is not recommended to get teeth whitening if any of the following apply to you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have sensitive teeth
  • Have receding gums or gum disease
  • Are allergic to peroxide
  • Have tooth-colored fillings or crowns, veneers, bonding, or bridges

Find out if you are a candidate for teeth whitening by scheduling an appointment online or calling the practice.

How are teeth whitened?

At Elegant Smiles, the team uses the one-hour Zoom! System to quickly whiten your teeth with a combination of a patented hydrogen peroxide bleaching gel and a special light. During your Zoom whitening treatment, your lips and gums are safely covered. Then, your provider applies the hydrogen peroxide whitening gel and a light to penetrate the teeth and break up stains. Most patients receive the gel three times with a 15-minute wait time after each application. The entire process takes about one hour in the office from start to finish with no messy trays.
