Dental Crowns

What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown or “cap” covers your tooth above the gum line, and is virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth. Dental crowns are used for various purposes, including:

  • Protecting and restoring a cracked or decayed tooth
  • Restoring a tooth after a root canal
  • Improving the appearance of misshapen, malformed or severely discolored teeth

Types of Dental Crowns At Elegant Smiles of Matawan

Our experienced dentist will assess the condition of your teeth and determine which type of crown will best fit your needs.

All-ceramic crowns provide the most effective natural color match and are usually suitable for people with metal allergies. Often used for cosmetic purposes, ceramic crowns are an attractive and stable choice for front teeth. Porcelain crowns made with zirconia are the strongest ceramic crowns available.

Porcelain fused to metal crowns are made of metal alloys coated with porcelain. They are color-matched to your existing teeth but may show a dark sliver of color at the gumline. This type of dental crown can be used for either front or back teeth.

Gold crowns tolerate chewing forces very well and rarely chip or break. They are often used for people who clench or grind their teeth. Because they are a noticeable metallic gold color, they are typically placed on rear teeth.

Dental Crown Procedure

A crown typically takes two visits to complete. Dr. Jani will numb the tooth and surrounding area, shape your tooth to make room for the crown, and if needed, build up tooth structure to support the crown.

After the tooth is prepared, precise impressions are taken and sent to a dental laboratory to be fabricated. Highly skilled lab technicians create a custom-made crown designed to fit your tooth perfectly for a comfortable fit and proper bite alignment.

A temporary crown will be placed to protect your tooth until the permanent crown is ready in 2-3 weeks. The permanent crown will then be cemented to your tooth and provide a stable protective covering that feels and functions like a natural tooth. With proper care and good oral hygiene, dental crowns can last for over 20 years.
